Mouth Ulcers

What is a mouth ulcer?

A mouth ulcer is a superficial lesion affecting the mucous membrane inside the mouth. It is painful, with marked edges and a white or sometimes yellow centre, surrounded by bright red mucous membrane.

Small mouth ulcers heal on their own in around ten days, without leaving any scarring. However, they are very painful throughout this period, especially when chewing.

What causes mouth ulcers?

The exact causes of mouth ulcers are not fully understood. However, certain factors have been identified as encouraging their development:

  • heredity,
  • certain foods (histamine-rich foods, i.e. gruyere cheese, blue cheese, walnuts, hazelnuts, chocolate, apricot, pineapple, strawberries, raspberries, lemon, kiwi fruit, etc.),
  • physical injuries (biting the inside of the mouth, dental braces and plates, brushing your teeth too energetically),
  • certain medicines,
  • stress,
  • hormones (menstrual cycle, pregnancy),
  • immunological phenomena.
