Skin cracks
What causes dry skin?
The surface of the skin is protected by a “hydrolipid” film, formed of sebum and sweat, preventing water from evaporating.
The skin of the hands and feet is fragile, weakly vascularised and low in sebum.
The skin of the hands, which is thinner, does not possess many of the sebaceous glands that produce this film. When the skin on the hands becomes too dry, it becomes fragile.
Like the hands, the skin on the feet is subject to numerous attacks; as a result, the hydrolipid film is not resistant enough; dehydration is accelerated, leading to drying and loss of skin suppleness.
The skin of the hands and feet needs to be nourished and revitalised to prevent the development of cracks.
What are skin cracks, fissures and chapping?
The skin’s defence mechanisms cause inflammation, dryness and cutaneous thickening (hyperkeratosis) leading to rupture of the skin’s surface (development of skin cracks and fissures of various depths).
Skin cracks are often the final result of skin dryness that has not been treated.
Chapped skin is a small crack affecting the epidermis and part of the dermis, mainly seen on the hands, lips and nipples.
What are the causes and risk factors?
Changes in temperature, mainly cold. Skin friction and trauma (manual jobs, sport, etc.)
Irritating factors, dry skin, thickened skin or skin which has lost its suppleness.
